Los Pioneros Promenade
This is a place to relax and enjoy, built next to the dam facilities. From here, visitors can clearly see the city’s location.
It’s a great spot to watch the sunset, explore the Paraná River, nearby islands, the Yacyretá Dam, the beaches, the Loreto Ditch, the General San Martín neighborhood, the water intake station, and the local port.
The name “Los Pioneros” honors the first researchers of the Paraná River: engineers Gamberale and Mernoz. They worked for the Buenos Aires Port Authority and studied this area to see if a dam could be built at the Apipé rapids. The promenade is now a natural historic site.
From here you can see 18 km of sandy beaches. The central beaches are quieter. During summer (December to February), other beaches are more crowded, especially with young people.
Across from the viewpoint are the San Martín, Apipé Chica, and Apipé Grande islands, and the navigation channel that marks the border between Argentina and Paraguay. Barges carrying food to Buenos Aires pass through this channel.
You can also enjoy a panoramic view of the Yacyretá Dam.
If you continue along the path, you’ll see the 28 Viviendas neighborhood and five houses built for foreign directors of the project. Today, most are empty and used as guest houses.
